An Italian village by the sea in 1949. Marcello, the son of a poor fishermen, dreams of the beautiful Elaina Gamboccini, the village beauty. But he knows that his chances of getting her first date, when up against Armond, the son and heir of the Cessero Ice cream chain, to be very slim. Nevertheless, a small chance remains. Marcello, following the village tradition - The father of every sixteen year old girl is presented with a gift, which, if accepted, will win his daughter’s hand on her first date – remembers the cockerel, owned by the village butcher that wakes Mr. Gamboccini every morning. If he could only obtain that bird, the chance of the first date with Elaina, he believes, would be set in stone. But how can he obtain a cockerel that no one wants to sell and, that anyway, he could never afford?
